Situated northeast of Lake Mývatn, near the majestic Víti crater, Mývatnshöfn is a project which seeks to create a warm and functional retreat, that honours the rugged beauty of the Icelandic landscape.
The design is inspired by the natural landscape of the site, blended with the local architectural heritage. One building is a slight reduction of the other, reminiscent of the surrounding mountains. The buildings slope gently, integrating with the landscape and providing a striking iconic design that forms a memorable backdrop.
The buildings respond to the harsh climate using site specific materials to cover the roofs with highly insulated materials. The sloped roofs allow the building to be sheltered from wind and snow, and the materials were chosen with sustainability in mind.
