Best of Design Miami. Paris 2024

For its second edition, Design Miami. Paris is back in the legendary Hôtel des Maisons, from the 15th to the 20th of October. Here is a selection of galleries and exhibits that are a must-see.

  1. Myco Works x Paragone - Mycelium Muse

The Mycelium Muse exhibit brings together seven women artists and designers, each uniquely interpreting Reishi™ to create poetic and innovative objects, from screens to lighting. The group, including architects - Sophie Dries, Marion Mailaender, and Fanny Perrier, interior designer Joséphine Fossey, visual artists Sarah Valente and Pauline Guerrier, and artisan Anna Le Corno shares a common vision: challenging design norms while embracing sustainability.

Inspired by mycelium, they blend nature and art to push the boundaries of modern design. These women embody the modern muse—creative, empowered, and forward-thinking—offering a vision of a sustainable, artful future.

2. Galerie Yves Gastou x Galerie Desprez Breheret

For Design Miami/ Paris, Galerie Gastou, in collaboration with Galerie Desprez-Bréhéret, will showcase a collection of historical furniture by Jean Touret for the Artisans of Marolles.Touret's work, defined by a commitment to craftsmanship and the beauty of natural materials, embraces minimalism to highlight artisanal mastery. As the artistic director of the Artisans of Marolles, he united talented craftsmen to create brutalist masterpieces, where simplicity elevates each material. The exhibition will be held at Hôtel de Maisons, a former residence of Karl Lagerfeld, where the opulent setting will contrast with the refined elegance of Touret's designs.

3. Carpenters Workshop Gallery

Carpenters Workshop Gallery presents works by Vincenzo De Cotiis, Marc Newson, and Marcin Rusak for the second edition of Design Miami/ Paris at L’Hôtel de Maisons. The collection blends exceptional craftsmanship with innovative materials and forms, showcasing contemporary functional art and collectible design. Highlights include De Cotiis' DC1824 Floor Lamp, a sculptural piece combining hematite and cast brass with neon light, and his DC2002 Coffee Table, carved from cosmic black granite, embracing the stone’s natural texture. My personal favourites, Marcin Rusak’s Vas Florum 13 (pictured on the right), critiques floral beauty manipulation with 3D-printed flowers in bio-resin, while Marc Newson’s Pod of Drawers draws from André Groult’s designs, using hand-beaten aluminium over a fibreglass form.

4. Laffanour Galerie Downtown

Laffanour Galerie Downtown presents two spaces, one in the main interior, and the other is set in the gardens of Hôtel de Maisons. Prouvé’s 1946 8×8 demountable house—a masterpiece of modular design. Also on view in their booth: Perriand’s rare coffee table, a table and a long bench by José Zanine Caldas, plus Prouvé’s elegant ‘Présidence’ desk and chair.

Created for his family and installed in the charming seaside town of Carnac, Brittany, this 8×8 modular home—crafted from wood with a metal structure—became their beloved summer retreat. The house reflects Prouvé's genius for combining functionality and elegance in a compact, easily transportable design. A true testament to his forward-thinking approach to architecture, it remains an enduring symbol of innovation in modern living spaces.
